Walk-in Centres

NHS Walk-in Centres provides same day medical help when it’s not a life-threatening emergency. The service is open 8am to 7pm, 7 days a week and 365 days a year.

People who go to an urgent care or walk-in centres are typically:

  • mobile and able to move around
  • in need of same-day treatment.

Walk-in centres are NOT suitable for emergencies such as:

  • pregnancy related conditions
  • chest pain
  • breathing difficulties
  • severe pain
  • suspected strokes.

Patients should consider calling 999 or attending an emergency department.

Walk-in centres are suitable for people of have minor injuries and minor illness including:

  • minor headaches
  • ear problems
  • sprains and strains
  • wound infections
  • minor burns and scalds
  • minor head injuries with no loss of consciousness
  • acute minor skin conditions
  • minor abdominal discomfort and gastrointestinal problems
  • insect and (minor) animal bites
  • minor eye injuries
  • minor injuries to the back, shoulder, and chest
  • emergency contraception
  • urinary tract infections
  • minor limb injuries and fractures
  • minor respiratory illness such as coughs and sore throats
  • new wounds requiring closure or dressing.

The centre has x-ray facilities through the hours of service for adults and children over 2 years, they do not have access to order or carry out blood tests or scans. On occasion the service can reach capacity before 7pm and in this case patients attending may be given advice on where and when is appropriate to access care.

Appointments can be booked through 111, who can advise the most appropriate place to be seen for your condition.

When We Are Closed

The time when the Surgery is closed is called “Out-of-Hours” and this is being standardised to 18:30 to 08:00 every night except weekends and bank holidays.

Occasionally the surgery is closed for staff training. During these hours you can call NHS 111 by calling 111

  • NHS 111 is a new non-emergency telephone service designed to help people access the correct urgent local health services both in and out of surgery hours. Local residents will be able to call 111 when they need medical help and advice, but it isn’t a 999 emergency.
  • NHS 111 will determine whether you can wait to see a health care professional at your practice or need use another urgent service in the area. This may include advice to go to your local pharmacist / walk in centre / Out of hours GP appointment or visit.
  • NHS 111 call handlers use the Directory of Service (DoS) to find the most appropriate available service for you.

In an emergency you can dial 999 to order an ambulance. If you have been hurt in a accident you can go direct to the Accident and Emergency Department at Barnet General Hospital which has 24 hour opening, however minor injuries can be dealt with at Finchley Memorial Hospital.

Extended Hours

We understand that many of our patients have busy working lives and may not find it easy to get an appointment with us during the working day. To try to address this and in line with the NHS Long Term Plan, we are offering appointments from 07:30 throughout the week with GPs and nursing team as well as appointments available with the out of hours service.

Although these appointments are open to all, we ask that if you do not work and can be seen during the day that you do not request an appointment at these times. The appointments are all pre-bookable in advance. 

Evening and Weekend Appointments

Our staff to have access to out of hours at the evenings and weekends – please contact the surgery to book one of these appointments.  These appointments are provided to us via our Primary Care Network. 

Local Walk-in Centres and A&E

In a genuine emergency you should call 999. Chest pains and / or shortness of breath constitute an emergency.
